Conversation-starting styles and extraordinary colours:
It all kicked off for l.a.Eyeworks in September, 1979 when Barbara McReynolds and Gai Gherardi broke the mold and opened their one-of-a-kind shop right on Melrose Avenue in sunny Los Angeles.
Friends since high-school, Barbara and Gai trained as opticians and started out in some of California’s most iconic optical shops. (The kinds of optical shops with Elvis Presley and Stevie Wonder as clients. Iconic indeed.)
And their goal? Not just any eyewear store! They were set to stir things up, ready to give an edgy twist to traditional eyewear design norms. A visionary take on glasses and frames for people to see themselves in a bold new light.
Much more than that, both believed in the power of eyewear to connect with people. They wanted to open up new conversations about glasses, and launched l.a.Eyeworks with a mission “to encourage people to stop looking and to start seeing”.
